Music + Productivity

Music + Productivity

Music has a profound impact on our psyche. Science has just begun to scratch the surface on the effects of music on human focus and productivity. Studies show that listening to music while working can help boost productivity. The music you choose has the power to either boost or limit your productivity. Here’s how:

1. Genre + Productivity

Music can help to make repetitive tasks more bearable. For example, in a study titled, Effects of Music on Cardiovascular Reactivity Among Surgeons, researchers found that listening to music helped surgeons tasked with repetitive tasks in the lab (outside of performing surgery) to improve overall performance. Similarly, in the book, This is Your Brain on Music, Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin shared that music can make repetitive tasks more enjoyable and make it easier to concentrate while you’re doing them.

Studies suggest that the genre and type of music you listen to can have an impact on performance. For example, in a recent study titled Background music: effects on attention performance, scientists concluded that “music without lyrics is preferable because songs with lyrics are likely to reduce worker attention and performance.”

We recommend instrumental and low-fi music to help maintain productivity levels throughout the day.

2. Volume

A study from the University of Illinois found that playing music at a low volume may help to boost performance and creativity while doing focused tasks. On the other hand, too high of a volume can become distracting, especially while doing work that involves a lot of reading.
